Henri Rousseau began painting while in the army as a hobby. People thought he painted very naive or had a childlike style. He felt this was his style and stuck with it throughout his career. He is well known for his jungle themes. 

Rousseau had never seen the jungle. He used the zoo and magazines for the images he painted.

Other famous artists liked his work and promoted him. Picasso, Matisse, Van Gogh and Chagall.
